Barton upon Humber is a small attractive town located along the bank of
the Humber estuary, being the southern access point for the Humber
Bridge. The town has a good range of local amenities and facilities, and is
surrounded by open countryside.
Barton offers a wealth of history. Archaeological evidence suggests that
the town’s early settlements date back to Roman and Saxon times, and
was recorded in the Doomsday Book in 1086 with a population of 900. It
unusually has two very large and impressive churches, one with Saxon
work still evident which is now in the care of English Heritage. The town
also boasts a large conservation area containing many attractive street
scapes. |
